Mastering The Art Of Layering

How To Layer Up In Style

As a personal stylist, I often hear men express uncertainty about how to create a layered look that feels polished and put-together. It’s a common challenge—layering can easily feel bulky or overly casual if not done thoughtfully. The secret isn’t just about piling on the right amount of clothing; it’s about curating a combination that balances textures, colors, and fits to maintain a refined, elevated style.

When done right, layering not only adds warmth but also adds depth and sophistication. Here are some guidelines to start you off.

The Basics

  • Stick to Three Visible Layers: While you can wear more than three layers, it’s best to limit the visible ones to maintain a clean look. Many menswear brands over style/layer their mannequins and models to showcase multiple products in an array of textures and colours. This approach rarely translates well to everyday life. If in doubt stick to a tonal palette mixed with white. Think navy /blue/white tee.

  • Fabric Weight Matters: Wear thin fabrics closer to your skin and save thicker textured materials for outer layers.

  • Each Layer Should Stand Alone: Each layer should work as a standalone piece — otherwise you find yourself in a position where you can’t remove any of your layers, and that kind of defeats the whole point and practicality of layering.

Layering Components

A successful layered outfit typically consists of three components:

  • Base Layer: Start with a breathable fabric, like a t-shirt.

  • Mid Layer: Add warmth with knits, sweats or shirts. Play with textures and colours or opt for a tonal look. A gilet can be used as both a mid and outer layer, depending on the weather.

  • Outer Layer: Protect yourself from the elements with a stylish coat, jacket or gilet.

Pay Attention to Proportions

Proportions are crucial in layering. Ensure that your layers fit well and compliment each other:

  • Slim fit: A fitted base layer ensures that you don’t add unnecessary bulk. Avoid oversized base layers that can make you look larger - unless that’s the look you are going for. Fitted equals sharp, oversized can equate more to street style.

  • Length matters: Consider the lengths of each layer. For instance, decide whether you want your shirt to be longer than your jumper or tucked in. There’s no right or wrong choice here—it's all about personal style.

Accessorise

Accessories are the finishing touch to your layered look. Here are some key pieces to consider:

  • Scarves: A scarf can add warmth and an extra layer of texture. Choose one in a contrasting colour or stripe to stand out.

  • Hats: A stylish hat can elevate your outfit while providing warmth. Consider a beanie or cap for an elevated appearance.

  • Footwear: Your choice of shoes can tie your entire outfit together. Boots and brogues and smart trainers work well for polished looks, sporty trainers for casual occasions.

Styling hats and scarves can enhance polished, sophisticated layered looks—not just casual outfits.

Experiment and Find Your Style

Layering is all about experimentation. Don’t be afraid to try new combinations and find what works best for you. Take inspiration from fashion blogs, magazines, and social media, but always stay true to your personal style and lifestyle.
